The Contribution of 'Corrosion and Durability' Education in Technical Disciplines to the Industry

Corrosion is one of the most fundamental challenges encountered by metal materials, the applications of which are increasingly expanding due to technological advancements. This process, occurring through the oxidation of metals resulting from chemical or electrochemical reactions under environmental conditions, shortens material lifespan, leads to significant economic losses, and poses occupational safety risks. Therefore, corrosion holds strategic importance regarding industrial efficiency and occupational health. The primary aim of this study is to provide an understanding of the industrial, environmental, and economic damages caused by corrosion and to develop solution proposals to mitigate these effects. In this context, the role of corrosion in technical education is examined, and the necessity of integrating a "Corrosion and Durability Education" course into the curriculum of technical programs is discussed. The integration of this course—covering topics such as material selection, protective coating techniques, and environmental impact control—will enhance students' competencies in material science, facilitate practical solutions to industrial problems, and contribute to the safer, sustainable, and efficient management of processes.
